Q. Why is the product being recalled?
A. The testing of the CHICK'N JERKY products had shown some positive results
for Salmonella. Out of an abundance of caution, the company is conducting a Class
1 recall of the products to the consumer level.
Q. Who does Salmonella affect?
A. Salmonella can cause infections in dogs and cats and, if there is cross contamination,
in people, especially children, the aged, and those with compromised immune systems.
Q. What are the effects of Salmonella in pets?
A. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody
diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever
and abdominal pain. Apparently well animals can be a carrier and infect other
animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these
symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
Q. What are the effects of Salmonella in humans?
A. Healthy people infected with Salmonella can have some or all of nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella
can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis,
arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers
exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact
their healthcare providers.
Q. Have there been any reports of illness?
A. The company has received one report of Salmonellosis in a dog. There are no
reports of human illness.
Q. What should be done with the product?
A. Consumers should throw the product away. Retailers can either destroy the
